Omaio - a place of quiet
The name Omaio (pronounced aw-my-aw) means quiet place. There is a bay in the eastern Bay of Plenty with the name. One of the owners first used the name for a house in Christchurch when he bought it in 1984.
It is also the name of the first place the two owners of the current Omaio shared.
The current owners, who are both keen swimmers, bought Omaio in 2020 when their plans to travel to undertake various swims around the world in retirement were obviously not going to happen for some time.
Taupō is a great base for open water swimming and Omaio’s heated indoor pool was a big plus.
The house was designed by the architect to cater for multi-generational groups on holiday. Plenty of space for a large group to interact and also for smaller groups to do their own things. Lots for children and young people to do with the pool and home theatre. Places where the adults can sunbathe and enjoy food and drinks.
The other special feature is the house was designed for easy living by a person with a mobility disability. Large internal lift. Accessible shower in master. Wide hallway. Level entry from garage to house. Lots of flat areas in grounds. etc.
